Job summary

SmithGroup, Inc. in Phoenix is seeking a Senior Designer to lead architectural design across all project phases for Higher Education and Science & Technology labs. You will develop concepts, produce drawings and renderings, and present designs to clients while guiding project teams.

The ideal candidate has a 10+ year track record, a degree in Architecture, and a strong portfolio. You will mentor junior staff and participate in interviews in a hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience as an architectural designer leading projects.
  • A strong portfolio across Higher Education and Science & Technology markets.
  • Experience leading design teams and project groups.
  • Proficiency with Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD, Rhino, Lumion, and Enscape.
  • Exemplary leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead architectural design for all project phases.
  • Develop design concepts for HE and S&T labs pursuits.
  • Collaborate with designers, planners, project architects and engineers.
  • Produce architectural drawings, renderings and design assignments.
  • Prepare and lead design presentations and participate in interviews.

Working with us, you will:
  • Work with the Design Principal and project teams to lead architectural design for all project phases including conceptual designs, presentations, schematic design, design development, and construction documents.
  • Develop design concepts for highly competitive pursuits and commissioned projects in Higher Education and Science & Technology (laboratory) markets.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other designers, planners, project architects and engineers.
  • Produce architectural drawings, renderings and design assignments.
  • Prepare and lead design presentations and participate in project interviews.
  • Provide oversight, mentoring and monitoring of the work performed by junior staff.
  • Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Participate in employment interviews and serve as design expert and leader.
An ideal candidate has:
  • A bachelors degree or higher in Architecture.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience as an architectural designer leading and working with medium to large-sized projects.
  • A strong and diverse design portfolio across Higher Education and Science & Technology (laboratory) markets.
  • Experience leading design teams and project groups required.
  • Proficiency with and experience using current design software including Revit, SketchUp, AutoCAD, and other modeling and rendering software programs such as Rhino, Lumion and Enscape.
  • Exemplary leadership skills, strong written and verbal communication, and organizational skills to help facilitate the development of trusted relationships with clients and staff.
  • A portfolio of conceptual and built work to share.
