Qualifications

  • Minimum of 14 years of full-time professional experience managing facilities design, planning, or coordination of capital projects.
  • At least 4 years of experience in design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public-agency projects.
  • Strong experience managing multidisciplinary teams, architects, engineers, and consultants.
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering required.
  • Master's degree and professional licenses are preferred.
  • Knowledge of seismic, critical repair, retrofit, renovation, and modernization projects.
  • Strong budget, cost estimating, and scheduling capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and stakeholder management skills.

Job description

Avsar Construction is seeking an experienced Senior Design Manager responsible for managing and coordinating the design process for multiple capital improvement, seismic, critical repair, retrofit, renovation, and modernization projects. The successful candidate oversees projects from planning and design through completion, ensuring that designs meet functional program requirements, budget and schedule objectives, environmental and legal requirements, and applicable building and design standards.

This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and the ability to effectively manage architects, engineers, consultants, design professionals, and project stakeholders throughout the design and review process.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage multiple projects with particular emphasis on seismic, critical repair, and retrofit projects.
  • Lead and supervise design professionals and other project staff through the design review process.
  • Manage, develop, and coordinate the A/E design process to ensure projects meet functional, budgetary, environmental, legal, and technical requirements.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, and project stakeholders to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Oversee building design and modernization activities to ensure compliance with applicable standards, guidelines, educational requirements, and building codes.
  • Evaluate and select architectural and engineering firms based on qualifications, project requirements, and demonstrated ability to meet performance standards.
  • Provide architects and consultants with clear direction regarding project goals, objectives, standards, sites, schedules, and budgets.
  • Establish and implement effective design review processes to ensure design quality and alignment with project objectives.
  • Review design changes and assess their impacts on scope, budget, schedule, and overall project delivery.
  • Monitor project planning and design status and provide updates, recommendations, and risk assessments to project stakeholders.
  • Ensure projects provide maximum value within established budgets while meeting long-term functional, community, environmental, and facility needs.
  • Manage design coordination, contract administration, cost estimating, scheduling, and project controls throughout the capital project lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with project management and construction teams to support successful project delivery.
Required Qualifications
Experience
  • Minimum of 14 years of full-time professional experience managing facilities design, planning, or coordination of capital projects.
  • Experience must include:
  • The overall management of design, contract administration, cost estimating, and scheduling activities.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in the design, planning, and construction of educational facilities or similar public-agency projects.
  • Strong experience managing multiple complex projects, multidisciplinary teams, architects, engineers, and consultants.
  • Strong experience with design review, project coordination, budgeting, scheduling, and resolution of complex design and project issues.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from a recognized college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Architecture or Engineering.
  • Valid California Registered Architect (RA) license or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Additional certifications in project management, construction management, design management, or related disciplines are highly desirable.

  • Comprehensive understanding of architectural and engineering design processes and capital project delivery.
  • Knowledge of seismic, critical repair, retrofit, renovation, and modernization projects.
  • Strong understanding of building standards, codes, environmental requirements, and regulatory processes.
  • Strong project planning, budget management, cost estimating, and scheduling capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary design teams and external A/E consultants.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and competing priorities while maintaining quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
