Job summary

County of Chester seeks a Deputy Sheriff III (Sergeant) to supervise and coordinate multiple operational functions, including court security and specialized units. You will lead deputies, oversee scheduling, and ensure compliance with laws and policies.

You will train personnel, participate in investigations, and act as Officer-in-Charge as needed, delivering decisive leadership and maintaining public safety across the Sheriff’s Office.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED with 3+ years' related experience.
• Complete Act 120 Municipal Police Officers Education and Training.
• Maintain Act 2 certification.
• Complete annual in-service training requirements.
• Maintain firearms qualification.
• Maintain CPR, EMS Provider and OC certifications.
• NIMS ICS training within one year of promotion.
• Complete a police supervisor training course.
• Strong knowledge of office policies and procedures.
• Pass a pre-promotion drug screen at HR-approved facility.
• Criminal and civil law knowledge and experience.
• Defensive and security tactics expertise.
• Certified in basic first aid.
• Strong interpersonal, customer service and listening skills.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Flexible, multi-tasking with high work ethic.
• Professionalism, integrity, and handling confidential matters.
• Ability to work with diverse backgrounds and levels.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and provide leadership to deputies across multiple operational functions.
• Oversee daily assignments, scheduling, and personnel deployment.
• Provide oversight of critical incidents and ensure proper response.
• Conduct evaluations of security risks and procedures and recommend improvements.
• Assist in training and development, including tactical response and de-escalation.
• Review and approve reports, use of force incidents, and operational plans.
• Participate in internal investigations and personnel management.
• Serve as Officer-in-Charge when required and take command of incidents.
• Review deputy merit performance and participate in OIC rotations.
• Perform other duties and special projects as required.
