Job summary

Monterey County seeks a Chief Deputy County Counsel to lead civil litigation, administrative hearings, and other legal proceedings for the County Counsel's Office. You will argue matters in court, draft legal instruments, and provide strategic legal advice to County departments and the Board of Supervisors.

The successful candidate will have extensive civil law experience, strong research and writing skills, and the ability to supervise staff and coordinate with multiple offices.

Qualifications

• Two years experience as Deputy County Counsel IV with Monterey County.
• Three years of increasing responsibility in a public agency in the appropriate legal specialty at a level comparable to Deputy County Counsel IV.
• Five years of increasingly responsible experience in a county counsel’s office or similar civil public law office as a senior attorney.

Responsibilities

• Attend and argue matters at court hearings related to pleadings, motions, and discovery.
• Conduct legal research and prepare written and oral arguments.
• Draft legal instruments such as ordinances, resolutions, Board orders, Joint Powers Agreements, and contracts.
• Establish confidential relationships with County department heads and Board of Supervisors.
• Develop cooperative working relationships within the County Counsel’s Office and with external parties.
