County of Monterey's Office of the County Counsel seeks an Assistant County Counsel (Promotional Only) to lead a major division, supervise staff, and provide expert legal advice to County officials and agencies. The successful candidate plans and manages day-to-day operations, reviews complex documents, represents the County in civil matters, and advises on policy implementation.

Qualifications

• Experience supervising attorneys in a governmental setting.
• Ability to advise County officials on complex legal issues.
• Knowledge of California and federal civil procedures applicable to public entities.

Responsibilities

• Assist in planning and directing the County Counsel’s office; participate in staff selection.
• Represent the County in meetings with boards, commissions and public agencies; analyze policy issues.
• Direct a major legal division; assign cases; supervise attorneys; provide guidance on complex issues.
• Review legal documents, briefs, contracts and other instruments; draft opinions as needed.
• Provide legal advice on major significance issues and attend related meetings.
