Job summary

Verizon Connect seeks an experienced Database Administrator in the Atlanta area to join our Global Database Services team. The role focuses on high-availability databases, incident management, and proactive maintenance in a hybrid work model with on-site presence in Alpharetta, GA.

The ideal candidate will have strong PostgreSQL and MySQL expertise, automation experience, and a service-oriented mindset to deliver reliable database services at scale.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or 4+ years of work experience.
• 4+ years of relevant database administration experience.
• Advanced knowledge of PostgreSQL (17/18) and MySQL (8.4).
• Experience with backups, PITR, security, monitoring and alerting.

Responsibilities

• Own and resolve database incidents and requests.
• Review backups, maintenance, and monitoring to prevent issues.
• Respond to alerts and coordinate with engineering for solutions.
• Improve automation for provisioning and monitoring processes.
• Maintain high availability and performance of large databases (>2TB).

Verizon Connect has an immediate need for an experienced Database Administrator based in the Atlanta Georgia region to join our Global Database Services team. The ideal associate will be a highly competent, results driven as well as a highly self-motivated individual.

This DBA role requires a service oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in a prompt & efficient manor, establishing and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with status of their requests, initiating and performing changes on production systems and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.

Responsibilities:

• Owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests.
• Fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within SLAs.
• Reviewing service-related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure operational issues are identified and resolved promptly.
• Responding to database related alerts and escalations and working with database engineering to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems.
• Enhancing automation for database platform provision process
• Enhancing database monitoring & alerting platforms to ensure proactive alerting is always achieved.

Please note that this is a hybrid role requiring on-site presence in Alpharetta, GA for part of the week. Candidates who are unable to commute to this location will not be considered

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

• Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
• Four or more years of relevant experience required, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.
• Four or more yars of relevant Database administration experience in a large data environment
• Deep understanding of PostgreSQL & MySQL database architecture and internal components with particular focus on :-
  • Custom automated vacuuming
  • Re-indexing
  • Statistics
  • Partition maintenance
  • H/A implementations
  • Backups, restores & Point-in-time recovery
  • Security
  • Monitoring & alerting
• Advanced knowledge of Database Administration on the PostgreSQL (versions 17 & 18) platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of Database Administration on the MySQL (8.4) platforms.
• Advanced knowledge of Troubleshooting and resolving database problems in a high transaction OLTP environment.
• Advanced knowledge of Database Performance Tuning & Optimization and Query cost management
• Advance knowledge of writing, debugging and tuning of SQL / PLSQL code
• Deep knowledge of Partitioning on both MySQL & PostgreSQL
• Deep knowledge of vacuum processes and housekeeping of large databases (>2TB)
• Significant operational and support experience with large data platforms
• Experience with scripting/automation (Powershell / Python / sparc preferred).

Even better if you have:

• Experience with PostgreSQL & MySQL in an AWS environment, especially RDS Aurora implementations.
• Experience with ownership & management of ElasticSearch in AWS
• Experience with ownership & management of Redshift in AWS
• Experience in working as part of a geographically dispersed team
• Experience in any other database management systems (such as SQL Server)
• Ability to learn new technologies and scripting languages

• Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume, agile environment.
• Ability to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm and innovation

Where you'll be working

In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes working from home and a minimum of three days per week in the office, which will be set by your manager. Employees are responsible for maintaining compliance with hybrid work policies.
