Job summary

Multnomah County is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to lead the transition from on-prem to cloud, focusing on Azure and Snowflake. The role emphasizes data security, optimization, and preparing our data systems for the future.

You will manage SQL servers daily, design backups, mentor staff, and collaborate on BI projects, including Tableau Server and Power BI Server. Telework is routine with onsite meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience required.
  • 5 years of database administration experience (or equivalent training).
  • Advanced knowledge of Azure Cloud services such as Azure SQL Managed Instance/Database, Data Lake, Data Factory, DevOps, Boards, etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of data warehousing and BI data marts.
  • Experience building ETLs for reporting with developers.
  • Proficiency with database logging tools (Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).
  • Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms: Tableau, Tableau Server, Power BI, Power BI Report Server, SSRS.
  • Expertise in installing, tuning, securing, and administering on-prem MS SQL Server and cloud environments.
  • Experience with SSIS and Microsoft Integration Services.
  • Familiarity with AD and Azure Entra ID security.
  • Knowledge of backup/recovery design for MS SQL Server and Azure.
  • Basic knowledge of networking, Windows Server admin, SAN/NAS storage, virtualization, and HA technologies.
  • Scripting skills in T-SQL, C#, WMI, PowerShell.

Responsibilities

OVERVIEW

You are an experienced Senior Database Administrator with practical knowledge in Azure cloud and either Snowflake or BI platforms such as Tableau Server, Power BI Server, and SSRS Server. Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator to lead the transition from on‑premise servers to a modern cloud architecture while ensuring our data systems are secure, optimized, and future‑ready.

Responsibilities
  • Manage SQL servers and databases daily, ensuring proper configuration and sufficient storage.
  • Lead the migration to cloud platforms, redesigning data storage from on‑prem to Azure and Snowflake.
  • Design and implement backup and recovery plans to guarantee rapid data restoration.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and implement optimizations for maximum efficiency.
  • Serve as a mentor for IT staff, troubleshooting complex issues and educating on new database tools.
  • Apply the latest patches and updates to keep software secure, while staying informed on emerging technologies.
  • Collaborate on Snowflake projects to migrate business‑intelligence data from on‑prem SQL servers.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • 5 years of database administration experience (equivalent to 9 years of qualifying training and/or experience).
  • Advanced knowledge of Azure Cloud services (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of data‑warehousing and business‑intelligence data marts.
  • Experience building ETLs for reporting with developers.
  • Proficiency with database logging tools (Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).
