Job summary

The Hartford Steam Boiler is seeking a senior data scientist to independently drive data science projects, mentor junior staff, and manage multiple projects while aligning with business goals. You will contribute to predictive analytics and ML efforts across insurance domains, ensuring robust, production-ready results.

Ideal candidates bring advanced degrees, strong Python/R/SQL skills, experience with cloud platforms, and familiarity with big data on Linux.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree required in statistics, CS, engineering, mathematics or related field.
• PhD in a qualitative discipline is preferred.
• 4+ years’ experience in predictive analytics, data mining or statistical analysis in insurance or 6+ years in other industries.
• Experience with feature engineering on structured and unstructured data.
• Experience with Git or similar version control tool.
• Experience with big-data tech on Linux-based systems.
• Experience with deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch).
• Experience with Bayesian languages/frameworks such as Stan or PyMC3 is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor junior data scientists on projects.
• Own and execute a portfolio of data science projects with self-managed timelines.
• Interface with other divisions to align analytics with business goals.
• Make methodological decisions within project scope and ensure production-readiness.
