Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to design, build, and scale AI solutions that power scientific discovery across the global research ecosystem.

You will work on NLP, LLMs, retrieval, and knowledge graphs to help researchers uncover insights, support decisions, and accelerate science. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor others in responsible, production-ready AI.

Qualifications

• Significant hands-on experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, AI, NLP, Information Retrieval, or related quantitative disciplines.
• Advanced expertise in deploying ML/NLP/RAG solutions in production environments.
• Experience with modern LLMs, prompt engineering, model evaluation, and AI-powered workflows.
• Extensive Python programming skills and production-quality software.
• Experience designing RAG systems, semantic search, vector retrieval, or recommendation solutions.
• Deep understanding of ML fundamentals, experimentation, and performance measurement.
• Proficiency with frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face, LangChain, or LangGraph.
• Experience handling large-scale text-rich datasets.
• Passion for advancing science and expanding access to knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy ML, NLP, retrieval, and generative AI solutions for scientific discovery.
• Build and optimize LLM-powered applications including QA, literature summarization, and semantic search.
• Develop RAG systems connecting AI models with trusted scholarly content.
• Create capabilities for search, ranking, recommendation, entity extraction, and enrichment.
• Design evaluation frameworks for quality, relevance, grounding, and trustworthiness.
• Integrate knowledge graphs, ontologies, and metadata into AI workflows.
• Partner with engineering teams to monitor, optimize, and scale AI systems.
• Lead technical discovery and guide architectural decisions across initiatives.
• Mentor fellow data scientists and foster a culture of responsible AI.
• Collaborate with Product, Research, Editorial, UX, and domain experts to solve problems.
