Job summary

Virgin Voyages is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to set the technical direction for our data platform, owning architecture, pipelines, reliability and data quality. You will lead with autonomy, partnering across Data Engineering, MLOps, and Analytics, driving AI-assisted development and best practices in testing, CI/CD, and observability.

You will work with Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex daily, shaping end-to-end AI-driven pipelines and ensuring robust delivery across analytics and AI use

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience in data engineering or related data platform roles.
• Experience designing and evolving modern data platforms, pipelines, and architecture.
• Strong SQL and Python skills.
• Hands-on use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and adoption across teams.
• Experience building AI-driven development workflows with testing, code review, and CI/CD.
• Solid software engineering practices: Git-based version control, code review, and automated testing.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for data and platform code (Scala, Maven, Bitbucket Pipelines).
• Observability in production data environments (monitoring, logging, lineage).
• Experience with cloud-based data platforms and modern data stack.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve the data engineering platform's technical direction, architecture, and standards.
• Design scalable, reliable data pipelines and platform capabilities for analytics and AI use cases.
• Lead modernization toward scalable, managed solutions with AI-assisted engineering.
• Champion AI-assisted development and define how AI-generated code is reviewed and deployed.
• Build an end-to-end, AI-driven development pipeline connecting AI agents across planning, coding, testing, and deployment.
• Establish engineering standards, including version control workflows, code review, and automated testing.
• Improve observability, monitoring, alerting, and data lineage across production environments.
• Collaborate with ML and data teams to enable AI platform capabilities and MLOps practices.
• Contribute hands-on in building foundational services and reusable frameworks.
