Job summary

Bluefors Syracuse, NY seeks a Senior R&D Engineer to design, develop and test cryogenic systems enabling quantum computing and related fields. You will work with multidisciplinary teams, convert research concepts into prototypes and generate production-ready designs using SolidWorks and GD&T.

The role requires a Master's (or PhD preferred) in Mechanical, Chemical engineering or Physics, 3+ years of cryogenics lab/industry experience, strong thermodynamics and materials science expertise, and

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• PhD strongly preferred.
• Minimum three years of hands-on cryogenics experience in lab or industry.
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and materials science at cryogenic temperatures.
• CAD skills (SolidWorks) and engineering analysis tools.
• Experience with laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, network analyzers) and P&ID docs.
• Ability to create GD&T drawings and maintain safe, high-quality work.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop cryogenic products and instruments using CAD (SolidWorks).
• Translate research concepts into prototypes and production-ready designs.
• Conduct thermal, hydraulic, structural analyses to support development.
• Build, assemble, test, and validate cryogenic systems and components.
• Create test plans, BOMs, SOPs, and technical reports.
• Maintain operation of cryogenic equipment (dilution refrigerators, cryocoolers, pumps).
• Ensure OSHA/ASME safety and engineering standards compliance.
