Job summary

Bluefors Cryocooler Technologies, Inc. in Syracuse, NY, seeks a Senior R&D Engineer to design and test advanced cryogenic systems for quantum computing and related fields.

You will build prototypes, perform detailed analyses, and create production-ready designs using CAD tools like SolidWorks. The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree (PhD preferred) and 3+ years in cryogenics, with strong thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science knowledge, plus proficiency in lab instrumentation

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or related field required.
• Ph.D. strongly preferred.
• Minimum of three years of hands-on laboratory or industrial experience in cryogenics or related field.
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and materials science at cryogenic temperatures.
• Experience with CAD software, engineering simulation tools, and laboratory instrumentation (oscilloscopes, multimeters, network analyzers, vacuum systems, P&ID).
• Experience with dilution refrigerators or similar cryogenic systems desirable.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills; commitment to safety.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop cryogenic products and scientific instruments using SolidWorks.
• Translate research concepts into prototypes and production-ready designs.
• Conduct research to advance cryogenic technologies and evaluate emerging concepts.
• Perform thermal, hydraulic, structural, and engineering analyses to support product development.
• Build, assemble, validate, and test cryogenic mechanical and electrical systems.
• Develop and execute test plans to verify performance, reliability, and safety.
• Create detailed engineering drawings using GD&T.
• Generate BOMs, technical reports, and SOPs.
• Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain cryogenic equipment including dilution refrigerators, cryocoolers, compressors, and vacuum systems.
• Diagnose system failures and implement corrective actions.
• Collaborate with scientists and cross-functional teams (mechanical, electrical, software).
• Support project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation for R&D initiatives.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, ASME, and safety/engineering standards.
• Promote safe laboratory practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
