Job summary

University of Utah seeks a versatile attorney to perform a range of legal tasks across employment, health, contracts, procurement, and higher education law. You will support litigation, advise on policy and compliance, and supervise outside counsel when needed.

The role requires a Juris Doctor and Utah bar admission, plus strong written/verbal communication and organizational abilities. Prior academic excellence and relevant experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• Admission to Utah State bar association required.
• Demonstrated organizational, effective verbal/written communication and human relations skills also required.
• Excellent academic record and related experience preferred.
• This position is not responsible for providing patient care.
• Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined.

Responsibilities

• Anticipates, identifies, and resolves legal issues in transactional and general legal work.
• Drafts, reviews, and advises on contracts including software licenses, equipment, services, employment, and research.
• Advises on employment, faculty, and student matters to University leaders.
• Oversees legal representation in hearings and litigation as needed.
• Negotiates settlements on behalf of the University with other officials.
• Responds to records requests under state and federal law.
• Drafts policies, regulations, bylaws, and other documents.
• Educates and trains University community about legal issues.
• Conducts and supervises legal research and analysis; prepares opinions as needed.
• Coordinates legal services across departments; supervises staff and outside counsel.
