Job summary

Tides is seeking a Senior Counsel, Philanthropy to join the Legal, Risk and Compliance team. You will serve as the internal expert on charitable exempt organization law across donor funds, programs, and investments, advising senior leaders and shaping risk controls.

You will vet offerings, negotiate complex contracts, and lead cross-functional legal initiatives while mentoring LRC colleagues and keeping the organization compliant with evolving regulations.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and California law license or registered in-house counsel required.
• 8 years of direct experience in charitable sector law.
• Experience with fiscal sponsorship, exempt organization compliance, and election and advocacy law.
• Experience advising nonprofit organizations on compliance program structure.

Responsibilities

• Serve as an authoritative internal resource on laws governing charitable exempt organizations within the assigned portfolio.
• Advise executive leadership on complex charitable grantmaking and investment questions, with risk mitigations.
• Lead legal vetting of new and existing service offerings and programs, identifying and resolving issues.
• Review and negotiate day-to-day contracts, grant agreements, and investment terms; develop policies.
• Respond to subpoenas, inquiries and investigations; coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
• Lead cross-departmental legal projects and staff training; translate developments into strategic guidance.
