Job summary

Tides Foundation seeks a Senior Counsel, Philanthropy, to serve as an expert internal resource on charitable and exempt-organization law within the LRC team. You will advise leadership on grantmaking, donor-advised funds, and investments, translating complex rules into actionable policies.

You will vet offerings, negotiate contracts, and develop legal documents while guiding risk mitigation and compliance across Tides Foundation and related entities.

Qualifications

• JD and CA law license required.
• 8+ years of nonprofit/charitable law experience.
• Experience with fiscal sponsorship, donor advised funds, and program-related investments.
• Ability to advise executives and translate legal concepts for non-lawyers.
• Strong judgment and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as internal legal resource on charitable exempt organizations.
• Advise on complex grantmaking and investments; escalate when needed.
• Vet and draft service offerings, contracts, and policy documents.
• Respond to subpoenas and compliance inquiries; coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
• Lead cross-departmental legal projects and staff training.
