Job summary

Systems Planning and Analysis, Inc. seeks an experienced attorney to serve as Associate General Counsel for Technology, AI, IP, and Legal Operations.

This role drives AI-enabled processes and tools within SPA’s legal department and divisions, partnering with the CIO and technologists to advance innovation and compliance in a defense context. The successful candidate will mentor the legal team and shape policies, with hybrid work from SPA Headquarters in Alexandria, VA and some travel.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and licensed to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• 7–10+ years of legal experience with the government, a law firm, or in-house, with a preference for in-house.
• Demonstrated expertise in technology, AI, IP, and legal operations, preferably in defense/intelligence.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Secret-level security clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
• Experience with data protection/privacy laws/regulations (GDPR, CCPA, FISMA, NIST RMF, FedRAMP, CMMC 2.0).

Responsibilities

• Advise on legal matters related to technology, AI, IP, and data protection/privacy, with a defense/intelligence focus.
• Lead and support AI-enabled legal processes and tools for SPA’s legal department and operations.
• Collaborate with the CIO, IT teams, and technologists to ensure legal compliance with SPA’s AI strategy.
• Provide guidance on regulatory, licensing, and data processing issues.
• Integrate legal risk management into technology and AI initiatives to support business objectives.
• Develop and maintain policies for data protection, privacy, and ethical use of AI.
• Advise on AI governance aligned to NIST RMF and DoD Responsible AI Tenets.
• Develop and implement IP strategy—trade secrets, licensing, open source, and patent coordination.
