Job summary

OpenAI invites a seasoned technology lawyer to lead high-stakes regulatory investigations and related litigation from initial inquiry to resolution. You will craft strategies for novel issues and translate complex regulatory records into clear guidance for leadership, collaborating with product, research, safety, security, and executive teams.

You will own matters across federal and international regulators, manage outside counsel, and help shape proactive strategies to safeguard AI development.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of regulatory investigations and/or litigation experience
• Direct engagement with regulators and opposing counsel
• Ability to translate complex legal/technical issues into practical recommendations
• Experience leading strategy and budgets with outside counsel
• Strong written and verbal communication with senior stakeholders

Responsibilities

• Lead regulatory inquiries, investigations, and enforcement matters in the United States and internationally
• Develop strategy for contested enforcement proceedings and related litigation
• Partner with litigation and subject-matter counsel on related civil disputes (privacy, consumer protection, IP, etc.)
• Manage subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and discovery
• Prepare executives for interviews, testimony, depositions, and appearances before regulators
• Negotiate resolutions and assess practical implications of remedies and commitments
• Select and manage outside counsel, set budgets, and ensure timely outcomes
• Develop proactive legal strategies to address regulatory risk for AI deployment
• Coordinate regulator engagement with Global Affairs and Communications
