Caterpillar Inc. is seeking an attorney to join its in-house litigation group. The successful candidate will provide legal support on mass tort litigation matters, including eDiscovery, legal holds, case strategy, discovery, motions, trial, and appellate practice. The role involves working directly with outside counsel on case assessments, budgets, and billings, often collaborating with other legal practice areas and the Global Government and Corporate Affairs Division.

The attorney will work internally with paralegals, engineers, the eDiscovery group, Legal IT, witnesses, and may participate in cross-functional teams. The candidate should be comfortable counseling business managers on risk management and commercial issues.

What You Will Do:

• Provide legal counseling on mass tort matters (primarily asbestos litigation)
• Draft, review, and monitor pleadings, briefs, and discovery
• Develop cases for trial with paralegals and witnesses
• Advise business clients on litigation risks and provide training
• Coordinate with insurers and Risk Management on insurance coverage and case reserves
• Lead teams of attorneys and work with outside counsel on case strategy
• Maintain strong relationships with outside counsel and contribute to the litigation program

What You Have:

• Risk Management: Knowledge of assessing and controlling organizational risks
• Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to analyze situations and make informed decisions
• Effective Communications: Ability to transmit and interpret ideas and information clearly

Education and Experience Required:

• J.D. from an accredited law school with strong academics
• Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar and qualifications for in-house counsel
• Minimum 8 years of litigation experience, including managing complex cases with an emphasis on asbestos litigation
• Proven success as a litigator
• Strong background in eDiscovery issues

$174,240.00 - $261,360.00
