Job description

Founded from the 2008 Ron Paul Presidential Campaign, Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) is the nation’s largest pro-liberty youth movement, building a powerful network of activists to transform states into beacons of freedom.

We utilize a 3 step "Build - Elect - Pass" model is driving real change in America's political system:

  1. Build: We are building the largest nationwide movement of committed youth activists on American college campuses. We have chapters established on over 500 campuses and with over 327,000 students on campus.
  2. Elect: Mobilize our base of committed youth activists to be the grassroots muscle on campaigns of principled liberty legislators through Operation Win at the Door. Since 2018, we've built a coalition of 400 active legislators in our National Liberty Legislator Coalition.
  3. Pass: Use this coalition of principled liberty legislators to pass transformative policy at the state level. This coalition has already passed over 750 liberty bills spanning from Universal School Choice, to Constitutional Carry, to major tax cuts and so much more. You can view the full list of bills passed at YALiberty.org/Liberty-Bills.

Vision

Our vision is to create Liberty Lighthouse States that will Transform Our States into Beacons of Liberty.

To do this, we've set an ambitious goal to raise $150 million over the next five years to make this possible.

We are building a highly skilled Development and Marketing team to achieve this goal – who have already raised $63 million in pursuit of this vision.

We are willing to pay above-market rates for a person with experience, a strong cultural fit, and an unwavering belief in the principles of liberty.

YAL has a confidential detailed plan to achieve our vision of Liberty Lighthouse States as well as a detailed plan to raise $150 million by 2030 and how this role will be instrumental to achieving that plan.

Both documents can be shared with serious candidates in the interview process.

Our Values & Culture

YAL's culture is built on 5 foundational values:

  1. Goal Setting: We orient our work towards specific goals that align with achieving our long-term vision.
  2. Trust the Truth: We pursue the truth and are honest in all we do, even when it’s difficult. There should never be a situation where lying is the right answer if we’re truthful from the beginning.
  3. Grassroots Mobilization: We win on principle by generating grassroots pressure on the politicians. Unless you are politically feared, you will not be politically respected. Education alone is not enough.
  4. Principle: We believe in liberty — which provides the freedom to choose and requires taking responsibility for your choices — and individual rights — which must be respected at all times.
  5. Power of the Individual: We recognize everyone has an innate ability to make a difference. Therefore, we are dedicated to aligning your goals and developing your strengths so you can unlock your full potential.

Candidates who will fit in with YAL's culture tend to be principled, entrepreneurial, passionate, and comfortable with ambitious goals and a fast-paced work environment.

The Senior Copywriter Role

You’ll work closely with a skilled and growing Development & Marketing teams to communicate YAL's mission, vision, and success to a donor face audience through multiple products: donor reports, proposals, email newsletters, direct mail, and more.

This is a fast-paced role where your writing will serve as the first point of contact for many of our supporters—setting the tone, telling our story, and making the case for financial support.

Responsibilities

  1. Writing and Editing YAL Newsletter [30%]
    • Draft and send weekly YAL newsletter for a high-dollar target audience.
    • Both email and direct mail formats.
    • Draft outreach in the voice of the Founder & CEO.
    • Review copy provided by other members of the organization for grammatical accuracy and compelling storytelling.
    • The weekly newsletter goes out on time and is done with accurate, correct, and compelling storytelling.
  2. Write and Send Direct Response Letters and Emails [20%]
    • Draft direct mail letters to target an audience of either house file or prospective donors.
    • Raise money off of both email and direct mail housefile.
    • Grow total donor file with content created. (List management and deployment is another team members role, content is yours)
  3. Research [15%]
    • Collecting stories and case studies of impact internal to YAL and then turning it into narratives appropriate for external deployment.
    • Using research and case studies to craft compelling narratives that can be used by Development officers for fundraising and reporting.
  4. Project Management [15%]
    • Using graphics, charts, and data to create aesthetically pleasing emails and donor content and using data-driven marketing to guide copy decisions.
    • Create emails that both in writing quality and aesthetics are ready to deploy while also developing and maintaining the brand voice and tone.

YAL is a rapidly growing organization that is building a highly talented team to raise $150MM over the next 5 years. To hit such ambitious goals, we are willing to offer between $60,000-$120,000 for this role, reflecting experience and accomplishments willing to exceed industry standards to acquire top talent.

The specific offer amount will reflect what we believe is value provided based on the qualifications of the applicant, but greener applicants should be encouraged by the fact that there is a high ceiling for long term development in this role.

For almost all roles, we establish a Salary + Bonus compensation structure that reflects the value creation of that individual's work. Compensation bonus structure and total compensation possibilities can be discussed in the interview process.

Young Americans for Liberty offers a highly competitive benefits package that includes, but is not limited to, best-in-class health care, vision, and dental insurance, 401k plan with up to 4% match, “take what you need” PTO and sick leave, and 8 weeks of paid leave for new parents, among other programs.
