Job summary

General Motors in Orion, MI is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer for the Body Shop on a 2nd shift. You will provide advanced controls leadership, oversee robotic welding, material handling, and automated production systems, and ensure safety, quality, cost, and throughput objectives.

The role requires strong independent judgment and technical authority. You will lead PLC and robotics standards, manage complex projects, mentor engineers, and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Experience programming and troubleshooting Rockwell/AB ControlLogix in high-volume automotive environments.
• Proficient in FANUC robot systems: path recovery, fault diagnostics, optimization.
• Strong knowledge of welding systems, weld controllers and robotic welding applications.
• Ability to read and modify electrical schematics and control documentation.
• Experience with automated body shop systems, material handling, and conveyors.
• Familiarity with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, ControlNet).
• Experience with safety-rated control systems and safeguarding requirements.
• Demonstrated leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Willingness to work 2nd shift and occasional extended hours.

Responsibilities

• Lead controls engineering strategy for body shop manufacturing systems.
• Serve as technical authority for PLC, robotics, and network standards.
• Manage complex electrical projects including upgrades and lifecycle replacements.
• Develop and advocate cost estimates and business cases for capital projects.
• Mentor Controls and Automation Engineers across shifts.
• Lead root cause analysis for complex equipment failures.
• Drive improvements using data-driven methods and statistical tools.
• Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering, suppliers, and corporate teams.
• Manage project plans, schedules, and risk mitigation.
• Represent Engineering in plant leadership and cross-functional planning.
