Senior Controller — PE-Backed Construction & M&A

Job summary

StevenDouglas is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead accounting for a growing PE-backed construction platform in South Houston, TX. You will own close, reporting, and project cost accounting across divisions, ensuring GAAP compliance and accurate WIP/ASC 606 treatment.

You will partner with executives and external advisors on tax, audits, and deal accounting, supporting M&A activity and post-close integration. Strong Excel and ERP skills are essential; CPA is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA preferred.
• 8–10+ years of progressive accounting experience including 3–5 years as Controller
• Experience in construction, utility, or project-based accounting including WIP and percentage of completion revenue recognition
• Familiarity with private equity backed reporting environments, including sponsor packages, covenant compliance, and EBITDA reconciliation
• Exposure to M&A transactions, including financial due diligence, purchase price allocation, or post close integration
• Experience managing external tax and audit professionals, with working knowledge of multi entity tax compliance
• Proficiency with ERP or project accounting systems (Vista/Viewpoint, Spectrum, JD Edwards, or similar); strong Excel skills required

Responsibilities

• Own the monthly close process and financial reporting for multiple divisions.
• Lead GAAP compliance with WIP, CIP, and ASC 606 revenue accounting.
• Manage AR, collections, and tax reporting with external advisors.
• Support M&A due diligence, quality of earnings, and purchase price allocations.
• Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors on annual audits and multi-entity tax compliance.
