Job summary

Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) is seeking a Controller to lead AFP’s accounting operations in Bethesda, Maryland. This role oversees close processes, financial reporting, and the integrity of our Sage Intacct system, while partnering with teams to ensure accurate invoicing and revenue recognition.

The ideal candidate has a CPA or nonprofit accounting background, extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP, and a proven track record in managing audits and internal controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
• CPA designation and/or association/nonprofit accounting experience preferred.
• Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and audit requirements.
• Experience leading month-end and year-end close processes and producing high-quality financial statements.
• Experience leading annual financial statement audits and coordinating with external auditors.
• Proficient with financial systems; Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead monthly and annual close processes with GAAP-compliant statements.
• Oversee accounting operations: GL, AP, AR, payroll, revenue recognition, cash management, expenses.
• Governance of Sage Intacct; ensure integrity of COA, dimensions, and reporting.
• Manage AFP’s accounting activities in the Association Management System and system integrations.
• Partner with Sales and program owners to ensure accurate invoicing, revenue recognition, and contracts.
• Provide financial insights to CFO and senior leadership; support budgeting and forecasting.
• Oversee banking and treasury activities; ensure liquidity and controls.
• Lead annual financial statement audit and liaise with external auditors.
• Strengthen internal controls and accounting policies; automate processes.
