Senior Consultant, Teaching Excellence and Academic Innovation

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Duke University is seeking a Senior Consultant, Teaching Excellence and Academic Innovation to help advance teaching excellence and educational innovation across the university. In this highly collaborative role, you will partner with faculty, academic leaders, and university stakeholders to design and deliver transformative faculty development programs that support effective, inclusive, and evidence-based teaching practices.

As a trusted consultant and educator, you will work directly with faculty across disciplines to strengthen teaching effectiveness, support pedagogical innovation, and enhance student learning experiences. You'll help translate current research in teaching and learning into practical strategies, resources, and programs that support instructional excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and professional education.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Duke's culture of teaching excellence while helping faculty navigate emerging opportunities in higher education, including innovative approaches to learning, educational technology, and artificial intelligence.

  • Completion of a master's degree is required; doctoral degree highly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant educational development experience within a higher education setting.
  • Minimum of three years of classroom teaching experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Expert familiarity with evidence-based teaching practices across instructional modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and online learning environments.
  • Expert familiarity with pedagogically grounded and learner-centered uses of educational technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver effective training for participants with varying levels of pedagogical experience.
  • Excellent executive functioning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, agility, and ability to adapt to changing priorities and evolving needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning, innovation, and professional growth.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in education, learning sciences, instructional design, higher education, or a related discipline.
  • Experience designing and facilitating faculty learning communities, institutes, fellowships, workshops, and other professional development programs.
  • Experience consulting with faculty on course design, curriculum development, assessment, and teaching innovation.
  • Familiarity with emerging applications of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
  • Experience supporting evidence-based teaching practices, including active learning, inclusive pedagogy, and innovative assessment approaches.
  • Other Requirements
  • Ability to build strong, trust-based relationships with faculty across disciplines.
  • Ability to participate in university committees, working groups, and institutional teaching and learning initiatives.
  • May hire and supervise student employees.
Work Arrangement

Hybrid eligible. This role requires living within a reasonable commuting distance of Duke University to support regular on-campus programming and engagement activities. Remote work agreement will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The budgeted salary for this position is between $112K - $127K
