Job description

Job Description
Senior Commissioning Engineer

Location: San Francisco, CA
Workplace: In-Office / Project Site Based
Compensation: $145,000+ depending on experience
Employment: Full-Time

We are seeking an experienced Senior Commissioning Engineer to join a highly respected engineering and commissioning team supporting complex, high-performance building projects throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced commissioning professional, MEP engineer, design engineer, or controls/MEP project leader who enjoys working across the full project lifecycle — from design review and controls coordination through construction observation, startup, functional testing, and final system verification.

Responsibilities
  • Manage commissioning projects from design through construction, startup, testing, and project turnover.
  • Review mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, controls, and building-system designs.
  • Review drawings, specifications, submittals, sequences of operation, and controls documentation.
  • Develop commissioning plans, checklists, functional performance tests, and issue logs.
  • Perform site observations and verify proper installation and operation of building systems.
  • Lead functional performance testing of HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems.
  • Review and troubleshoot BAS/DDC controls, system sequences, alarms, sensors, and equipment operation.
  • Identify commissioning deficiencies and work with contractors, engineers, and project teams through resolution.
  • Coordinate with owners, architects, MEP engineers, general contractors, controls contractors, and subcontractors.
  • Manage project schedules, documentation, client communication, and commissioning deliverables.
  • Support projects involving healthcare, higher education, research facilities, laboratories, commercial buildings, and other complex facilities.
  • Help ensure systems meet design intent, energy-performance requirements, and applicable commissioning standards.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in building commissioning, MEP consulting, or mechanical/electrical design engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, MEP systems, controls, BAS/DDC, and building-system operation.
  • Experience with commissioning processes including design reviews, site observations, startup verification, and functional performance testing.
  • Knowledge of California Energy Code and ASHRAE commissioning and energy-related standards.
  • Strong project management, communication, planning, and execution skills.
  • Comfortable working in active construction environments and interacting directly with clients and contractors.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam Revu.
  • Commissioning certification such as CxA, CCP, CBCP, BCxP, or similar is a plus.

Alternative backgrounds will also be considered: Candidates with significant industry experience may be considered in place of some education or certification requirements. Professionals with 6+ years of controls-contractor experience or contractor-side MEP/commissioning management experience are encouraged to apply.

What We Offer
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Long-term disability coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Additional employee benefits
  • Opportunity to work on technically challenging, high-performance building projects
  • Collaborative engineering environment with strong opportunities for professional growth

If you have a strong background in building commissioning, MEP systems, HVAC controls, BAS/DDC, building performance, or complex building systems and are interested in taking ownership of challenging commissioning projects, we would like to hear from you.
