Job summary

Norfolk & Dedham Insurance seeks an experienced Commercial Underwriter to balance agency development, relationship management, and underwriting capabilities within the territory. The role requires regular travel to agency offices and industry events to strengthen partnerships and support business development initiatives.

You will underwrite and evaluate commercial risks, manage book profitability, and communicate underwriting decisions clearly.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree preferably in Insurance, Business Administration, or a related field.
2+ years of Property and Casualty Insurance experience preferably in the commercial lines field.
Familiarity with commercial underwriting and N&D’s commercial risk appetite.
CPCU designation or related designations such as AU/AINS/CRIS, or willingness to pursue.

Responsibilities

Underwrite and evaluate new business and renewals for eligibility and pricing.
Analyze loss runs, operations, COPE data to determine risk acceptability.
Identify red flags such as loss history, gaps in coverage, billing issues, building maintenance.
Structure terms, conditions, endorsements and deductibles to match risk factors.
Document underwriting files clearly for appetite compliance.
Develop and maintain strong, trust-based agency relationships through communication and visits.
Monitor renewal quality, loss trends, and risk characteristics for profitability.
