Job Title: Senior CNC Machinist

Department: Operations

Reports To: 1st Shift Production Supervisor

About Our Company:

Since 1946, Hayes Performance Systems has built a legacy of innovation and quality. Starting as H-H Products in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, producing parts for outboard motors and small engines, we have grown into a global leader in braking and suspension systems. Today, we serve diverse industries such as powersports, cycling, agriculture, construction, and government.

Our 155,000-square-foot headquarters in Mequon, Wisconsin, along with dedicated teams across North America, Europe, and Asia, enables us to deliver tailored products and solutions that meet the unique needs of customers worldwide.

In 2023, Hayes Performance Systems expanded its capabilities by acquiring ACI Industries, a precision machining company specializing in custom metal and plastic components. This strategic acquisition strengthens our ability to handle complex projects—ranging from prototyping and short-run jobs to high-volume production—while upholding the quality and agility that define Hayes. Supported by cutting-edge CAD/CAM software and advanced high-speed machinery, ACI’s skilled team complements our operations perfectly.

At Hayes, we are dedicated to providing our employees with the tools, support, and opportunities they need to succeed and grow. When you join us, you become part of a company driven by innovation, collaboration, and dedication. If you’re ready to make an impact and develop your career, Hayes is the place for you.

About the Role:

As a Senior CNC Machinist, you will lead by example in operating, setting up, and optimizing CNC machinery to produce high-precision components. This advanced-level role requires strong technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and leadership capabilities. You’ll drive process improvements, troubleshoot complex machining challenges, mentor junior machinists, and uphold our commitment to quality and efficiency on the production floor.

Essential Duties & Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Independently perform complex machine setups, changeovers, and tooling setups using indicators and optical tool setters
  • Make advanced programming edits at the machine to enhance cycle time, part quality, and efficiency
  • Operate multiple CNC machines simultaneously, ensuring part accuracy and consistency
  • Perform advanced part inspections using tools such as CMM and conduct in-process inspections per SPC and work instructions
  • Monitor and adjust tooling offsets; escalate as needed for quality or tooling issues
  • Replace worn or broken tools and maintain accurate tooling records
  • Track productivity via hour-by-hour boards and communicate any downtime or concerns promptly
  • Lead troubleshooting for machining and tooling issues, working with maintenance and engineering teams
  • Coordinate scrap disposition and support root cause analysis for nonconforming parts
  • Mentor and train lower-grade operators, reviewing documentation and modeling best practices
  • Maintain proficiency in at least seven (7) machining cells and support across cells to meet production targets
  • Ensure proper program selection, part fixturing, and CNC validation during changeovers
  • Support workflow and machine operation across all machining cells
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and escalate issues when necessary
  • Contribute to Kaizen and other improvement events focused on minimizing waste and boosting performance
  • Maintain 6S standards for safety, cleanliness, and organization
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and teamwork; assist and collaborate across departments
  • Accurately document production output, issues, and part/material discrepancies
  • Support testing of new tools and equipment and assist with process validations
  • Comply with all ISO standards and quality procedures

What We’re Looking For:

Education, Skills, Experience, and Knowledge:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read and interpret technical blueprints
  • Proven experience performing complex setups and machining a variety of parts with minimal supervision
  • Ability to make advanced programming edits directly at the machine
  • Proficient in the use of precision measurement tools, including CMM
  • Experience operating at least seven (7) different machines, including two non-similar types (one CNC-controlled)
  • Knowledge of tooling offsets, complete setups, and fixture changeovers
  • Demonstrated low scrap rate and material efficiency over the past six months
  • Strong understanding of part defects, machine operations, and tooling applications
  • Ability to troubleshoot part defects and determine necessary tooling solutions
  • Capable of documenting part shortages, reporting production progress, and communicating clearly across shifts
  • Excellent communication skills for training and shift-to-shift handoffs
  • Strong focus on quality, safety, and continuous improvement
  • Must be able to stand and work for 85-100% of the workday
