Job summary

IBM Software is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build cloud-native, distributed backend services. You will own end-to-end delivery, balancing reliability, scalability, and performance while driving architectural decisions across multi-team efforts.

You will work with Python, Go, Java, and C/C++ in a containerized, cloud-first environment. A Master’s degree and strong communication skills are essential, with opportunities to mentor peers and shape platform strategies.

Qualifications

• 4+ years industry experience designing, building, and supporting backend systems in production.
• Strong knowledge of Python runtime environments (virtual environments, package management, interpreter configurations).
• Proficiency in a major programming language (Python, Go, C/C++, Java).
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience leading projects and coordinating across teams.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Own and lead design and implementation of complex backend services in a cloud-native, microservices-based environment.
• Make architecture and tradeoff decisions balancing reliability, scalability, performance, and operability.
• Drive projects end to end from requirements to production.
• Improve service reliability by defining SLOs/SLAs and observability.
• Collaborate to define APIs, data models, and integration points.
• Identify platform and productivity improvements across the engineering org.
• Mentor engineers through code reviews and design reviews.
