Job summary

American Express is seeking a Senior Cloud Engineer to join our Cloud Engineering team. You will help build and evolve our hybrid cloud platform, delivering scalable, secure cloud services and APIs within a PaaS framework.

The role requires 6+ years in cloud computing, REST API development with Go/Java, and strong hands-on experience with Kubernetes/OpenShift, Docker, and NSQL databases. Collaboration across API/UI/QA teams is essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent preferred.
• 3+ years of experience with all cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Private Cloud).
• 6+ years of experience developing REST APIs using GoLang and/or Java.
• 6+ years of experience with cloud computing, CI/CD, Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker, etc.
• Strong experience with NSQL databases (Couchbase and Etcd preferred).
• Deep understanding of security integrations – Okta, mTLS, SSO, HashiCorp Vault.
• Good understanding of API gateways, their functionality, and middleware solution development.
• Experience with container technologies – Kubernetes, OpenShift.
• Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as Git, Docker, Jenkins, Spinnaker, Release XL.
• Experience with code quality testing tools and API documentation (Swagger).
• Strong communication skills and ability to work as a collaborative team member.

Responsibilities

• Report to the Cloud Engineering team and contribute to building scalable, secure cloud services within our hybrid Platform as a Service (PaaS).
• Develop a technical approach to improve the American Express Hybrid Cloud platform, with a focus on automation for scalable cloud service delivery.
• Collaborate with API engineering, UI engineering, quality engineering, and product management to design and deliver high‑quality, scalable APIs and solutions.
• Explore and apply the latest technologies and libraries to create sustainable products.
• Implement API and middleware solutions that integrate with NSQL, partner systems, and secure integrations such as Okta, SSO, mTLS, and HashiCorp Vault.
• Apply software best practices, including design patterns, code quality, unit testing, integration testing, and code review.
• Demonstrate willingness to learn new technologies and maintain a quick, efficient delivery pace.
