Job summary

The Institute For Medical Research, Inc. seeks a Senior Data Scientist to support clinical informatics and biostatistics within the Durham VA Cardiology program, translating complex questions into reliable data, analyses, and actionable reporting.

You'll build scalable data pipelines, run advanced analytics, and create dashboards using REDCap, Power BI, and other tools, collaborating with investigators and operational partners across the analytic lifecycle from planning to dissemination.

Qualifications

• Advanced training or equivalent professional experience in data science or related field.
• Experience analyzing complex clinical data and collaborating with clinical or research teams.
• Proficiency in SQL and one or more analytics languages with reproducible workflows.
• Experience with statistical analysis and interpretation of observational or clinical-study data.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and communicate with diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Define cohorts, outcomes, exposures, data requirements for observational studies, trials, and quality-improvement initiatives.
• Extract, integrate, transform, and curate structured clinical data from VA CDW and other sources (lab, meds, procedures, diagnoses, encounters, vitals).
• Develop reusable data pipelines, analytic datasets, data dictionaries, validation checks, and traceability procedures.
• Perform systematic data quality assessment and reconcile with source systems.
• Provide statistical programming and analytic support using descriptive, inferential, regression, longitudinal, and survival methods.
• Contribute to study design, analytic plans, variable definitions, and interpretation of results.
• Create validated tables, listings, figures, and reports for investigators and leadership.
• Support protocols, abstracts, manuscripts, and grant applications with analytic documentation.
• Design and maintain data-capture, workflow, and reporting solutions using REDCap, Power BI, SharePoint, Power Automate.
• Automate processes for patient identification, eligibility screening, scheduling, reminders, and missing-data reviews.
• Develop dashboards tracking enrollment, data completeness, and study milestones.
• Test, document, refine, and sustain reporting tools while reducing manual processing.
• Evaluate advanced methods and ML approaches for clinical questions.
• Support research involving ECG, echocardiographic, and clinical data; develop prediction models.
• Develop reproducible ML pipelines and validation.
• Promote reproducible research via version control and standardized programming practices.
• Provide mentorship to analysts and staff.
