The position requires a high school diploma or GED and at least two years of full-time clerical experience. Residency is not required, but county residents receive preference in the hiring process.

The work involves responsibility for the performance of moderately difficult clerical duties. Employees generally follow a prescribed routine in the performance of moderately difficult financial record keeping duties. Unusual problems or situations not previously encountered are referred to supervisors. Specific instructions may be given for new or unusual assignments. The work differs from that of a Senior Account Clerk in that this position does not classify expenditures, prepare accounts payables, record payments for accounts receivables, or maintain and review financial records. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of one or more clerical employees. The work is performed under general supervision of the assigned supervisor, permitting the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. In the County service, this employee is primarily involved in overseeing a complex clerical procedure which may not involve steady or recurring supervisory responsibilities. A Senior Clerk does related work as assigned.

An individual who receives a provisional appointment must take the examination for the position title on the next occasion it is offered. In order to be eligible for a permanent appointment to the position, the provisional appointee must pass the exam and be ranked 1, 2, 3, or be tied in score with the individual ranked number 3 of those who are willing to accept appointment to the position. It should be understood that even if the provisional appointee is eligible for appointment, the employer may choose another candidate to fill the position on a permanent basis.
