Job summary

Open Door Legal in San Francisco is seeking a Senior Civil Litigation Attorney to lead our Civil Litigation Team and advance universal access to civil legal representation. You will supervise and develop a team of attorneys to provide high-quality legal services in torts, consumer, bankruptcy, and other areas, while expanding capacity to serve low-income clients.

Qualifications

• Must be admitted to the California Bar in good standing.
• At least six years of relevant professional experience.
• At least two years of civil litigation experience.
• Experience supervising paid staff attorneys and providing references.
• California civil law and superior court civil procedure knowledge.
• Motivation to work with low-income clients and trauma-affected individuals.
• Strong time management skills in a fast-paced, high-volume setting.
• Commitment to self-learning and professional development.
• Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
• Ability to build relationships with organizations and agencies as ODL's ambassador.
• Available to work from one or more office locations at least three days/week.
• Comfort with technology and case management systems (Salesforce, Dropbox, Google Suite).
• Cultural humility and sensitivity to barriers faced by San Franciscans seeking justice.
• Trauma-informed advocacy experience.
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Embody our mission of universal access to civil legal aid and ensure high-quality outcomes and client satisfaction.
• Oversee legal advice and representation provided by your team.
• Hire, train, mentor, and manage civil litigation staff, interns, fellows, and volunteers.
• Develop and maintain public relations with government agencies and other legal aid organizations.
• Use data-driven strategies to increase department capacity and achieve strategic goals.
• Lead knowledge management for civil law and create templates and checklists.
• Develop innovative solutions to capacity, intake, and case opening standards.
• Create uniform systems, protocols, and templates to maintain quality with minimal supervision.
• Provide services to low-income clients with cultural sensitivity and trauma awareness.
