Job summary

Pierce County is seeking a Supervisory Civil Engineer to lead an engineering team responsible for roads, stormwater, flood control, and related infrastructure. You will coordinate emergency responses and interact with residents, tribal partners, and agencies to ensure readiness and resilience.

The role requires nine years of civil engineering experience, an ABET-accredited degree, and WA licensure within six months of employment.

Qualifications

• Nine years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
• ABET-accredited degree in civil engineering or closely related field; substituted on a year-for-year basis up to four years of experience.
• Professional Engineers licensed in another state must obtain licensure by the State of Washington within six months of employment.
• Resume and cover letter are required for this position.
• A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

• Supervises assigned resources to complete work and secure approval of major engineering programs using planning and management methods.
• Provides leadership and direction to staff responsible for implementing a major engineering program; delegates authority commensurate with responsibility.
• Schedules and assigns employees; approves or denies sick leave, vacation leave, and overtime.
• Trains and educates staff on criteria and standards; provides engineering guidance and makes recommendations to County officials.
• Assists in recruiting and selecting processes; conducts final interviews and recommends hires.
• Performs reviews and evaluations of subordinate staff and initiates disciplinary action when necessary.
