Job summary

3M is seeking a Senior Research Engineer based in Maplewood, MN. The role focuses on developing and applying CFD models to advance fluid flow and heat transfer understanding across 3M materials and processes. You will work with a cross-functional team to propel next-generation products through multiphysics simulations and customer-driven engagements.

The ideal candidate has 3+ years in CFD with a Ph.D. or M.Sc. and experience in Python, HPC, and ML/AI integration.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.Sc. degree (completed and verified prior to start).
• Three (3) years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or other Science areas in a private, public, government or military environment
• Three (3) years of experience in computational fluid dynamics.
• Experience with Python or another programming language.
• Fundamental understanding of material handling, energy transport, and fluid flow.
• Understanding of High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
• Experience with integrating Machine Learning (ML) or Artificial Intelligence (AI) with CFD models.
• Familiarity with Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) models and reduced-order models.

Responsibilities

• Leading the development and application of CFD models to enhance understanding of fluid flow and heat transfer in 3M's materials and processes.
• Collaborating with a cross-functional team to drive the creation of next-generation products through Multiphysics modeling.
• Developing and validating CFD models to aid formulators and engineers in identifying optimal design spaces and process improvements, while supporting simulation engagements with customers.
• Initiating and contributing to the analysis and development of intellectual property.
