Job summary

Sompo is seeking a Senior Underwriter for its Primary Retail Casualty Business Unit to serve large accounts across diverse industries in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. The role emphasizes risk assessment, pricing strategies, and cross-unit collaboration to drive profitable growth.

The position requires 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience, a Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent), and willingness to travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
• Experience underwriting and managing accounts with large brokerage houses, regional agencies, and specialty retail brokers.
• Proven ability to develop, quote, negotiate and bind profitable business while managing portfolio performance.
• Established relationships with brokers and agents on regional and national levels.
• Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation and relationship-building skills.
• Willingness to travel up to 25% for market coverage.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a trusted underwriting expert across a broad range of casualty products and industries.
• Analyze submissions, evaluate risk exposures, and make timely underwriting decisions.
• Apply pricing and rating methodologies for programs like Guaranteed Cost, Captives, and SIRs.
• Evaluate large and complex casualty risks with detailed file documentation.
• Prepare and evaluate underwriting recommendations, rate modifications, and declination decisions.
• Build and maintain relationships with brokers and agency partners in the assigned territory.
