Job summary

Sompo seeks a Senior Underwriter in the Primary Retail Casualty unit, based in Morristown, NJ. You will be a trusted expert across a wide range of casualty lines, guiding pricing and risk assessment for large accounts with broad industry exposure.

You’ll evaluate submissions, apply advanced pricing—across Guaranteed Cost, Captives, and SIRs—and collaborate with brokers and internal teams to deliver multi-line risk solutions in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred or equivalent.
• Experience with large brokerage houses, regional agencies, and specialty retail brokers.
• Proven success in developing, quoting, negotiating, and binding profitable business.
• Established relationships with brokers and agents regionally and nationally.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Willingness to travel to market assigned territory (up to 25%).

Responsibilities

• Serve as a trusted underwriting expert across a broad range of casualty products and industries.
• Analyze submissions, evaluate risk exposures, and make timely underwriting decisions.
• Apply pricing methodologies across Guaranteed Cost, Captives, SIRs, and Deductibles.
• Evaluate large and complex casualty risks with detailed account reviews and documentation.
• Prepare underwriting recommendations, rate modifications, and declination decisions to support profitability.
• Build and maintain relationships with brokers and agency partners; represent Sompo in meetings and events.
