Job summary

Michigan Medicine's Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist (Animal Model Generation Technician) to advance cardiovascular and regenerative medicine research. You will lead generation, breeding, and characterization of genetically modified mouse models and perform in vivo experiments to generate robust, reproducible data.

Working with a multidisciplinary team, you will develop new animal models, coordinate studies across investigators, contribute to publications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Substantial hands-on experience with laboratory animal research, especially mouse models.
  • Expertise in creating and maintaining animal colonies and genotyping.
  • Ability to plan and execute technically demanding procedures independently.
  • Strong organizational skills and effective collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Generate, breed, maintain, and characterize genetically modified mouse models for cardiovascular research.
  • Coordinate and perform animal experiments, including genotyping, colony management, tissue collection, and phenotypic characterization.
  • Establish and optimize animal models of cardiovascular disease, including aneurysm, ischemia, vascular disease, cardiac injury, and tissue repair.
  • Develop and troubleshoot strategies for generating complex or technically challenging animal models, including conditional and tissue-specific knockout models.
  • Support generation and characterization of ACSS2 knockout aneurysm models and other modified models as needed.
  • Perform and assist with in vivo procedures and physiological/phenotypic assessments under approved animal protocols.
  • Collect, process, and preserve tissues for histology, molecular biology, imaging, and transcriptomic analyses.
  • Maintain records of animal colonies, procedures, genotypes, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with investigators to coordinate animal studies and meet milestones.
  • Contribute to development and optimization of new animal-model approaches and protocols.
  • Assist with data analysis, presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with IACUC and regulatory requirements for animal research.
