Job summary

Black Canyon Consulting is seeking a Senior Software Developer in Bioinformatics and Big Data to support NCBI at the NIH. This full-time role offers on-site work in Bethesda, MD with a remote option and involves building scalable sequence annotation and data curation infrastructure across petabyte-scale datasets.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience handling large amounts of data or working in a distributed computing environment.
• Programming experience in a Linux environment.
• Proficiency in C++.
• Experience with MS SQL Server and relational database design and optimization.
• Fluency in scripting languages such as BASH, csh, Perl, or Python.
• 5+ years of working with genetic and biological data (preferred).
• Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript and familiarity with their ecosystems (preferred).
• Experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases (preferred).
• Experience with Docker or containerization (preferred).
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, and integration and regression testing (preferred).
• Experience using GitHub (preferred).
• Cloud technologies experience is a strong plus (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the development, implementation, testing, and continued maintenance of NCBI bioinformatics software and information retrieval systems.
• Work with scientists and developers to implement efficient bioinformatics algorithms.
• Learn new technologies, keep up with internal systems, and share knowledge with the team.
