Job summary

City of Mansfield is seeking an Assistant Director of Building Safety (Building Official) to lead the Building Safety Division. This role is the City’s primary technical resource on codes, plan review, permits, inspections, and enforcement.

You’ll set division standards, guide staff, and ensure safe, compliant development. Ideal candidates have ICC CBO, a relevant bachelor’s degree, and extensive code enforcement experience, plus supervisory credentials.

Qualifications

• ICC Certified Building Official (CBO) designation required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Public Administration, or related field preferred; experience may substitute.
• Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License required.
• 7+ years of experience enforcing building codes with at least 5 years in a supervisory role within permitting/inspections.
• Additional ICC certifications and permit-management software experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Direct, assign, and evaluate inspectors and administrative staff; set expectations and develop the team.
• Direct enforcement of applicable building code provisions; oversee violation investigations.
• Ensure all permitted work meets safety standards and codes; respond to unsafe conditions.
• Oversee plan review, permit issuance, fee collection, and contractor registration.
• Provide technical support and recommend code updates to City management and Boards.
