Job summary

The Town of Vail is seeking a Senior Building Inspector / Plans Examiner to join our Community Development team. This dual-function role combines in-field complex inspections with comprehensive plan reviews to ensure compliance with adopted codes and life-safety standards.

You will move between active construction sites and detailed technical plan reviews, interpreting codes and Town ordinances and maintaining precise records.

Qualifications

• Experience performing both building inspections and plans examination.
• 4–5 years reading and interpreting construction drawings and codes.
• ICC certifications for inspection and plans examination required or to be obtained within Town timeframe.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Perform building, plumbing, mechanical, and related inspections of commercial and residential projects to ensure code compliance.
• Conduct commercial and residential plan reviews for new construction, renovations, alterations, additions, and repairs.
• Review permit applications, drawings, specifications, and other technical documents for completeness and code compliance.
• Ensure life-safety requirements including accessibility, egress, fire resistance, and structural soundness are met.
• Interpret and apply International Code Council codes and Town ordinances.
• Maintain inspection and plan-review records and communicate corrections clearly to applicants and contractors.
• Assist customers at the Community Development counter and respond to technical questions.
• Mentor less-experienced staff and collaborate with other Town departments.
