Overview

General Duties and Class Specifications: To have charge of and participate in the cleaning and sanitary maintenance of a branch library building, or under supervision, to participate in the cleaning and sanitary maintenance of the Central Library building, the care and maintenance for the basic operation of the HVAC and electrical systems, the care and maintenance of the grounds of the building, and to perform related work as required.

Typical Duties

Responsibilities:

• Sweeping, washing, polishing, and vacuuming floors (concrete, asphalt tile, linoleum, vinyl tile, cork, terrazzo, marble, wooden, ceramic tile, and carpet), including the safe use of detergents, chemicals, and cleaners, sawdust, mops, pails, and brooms, and the use and care of cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, waxing and polishing machines, and carpet cleaners).
• Caring for light fixtures, shades, reflectors, lenses, prismatic glass, and other building furnishings and equipment.
• Cleaning, packing, and moving books.
• Moving furniture and equipment.
• Responsibility for the basic operation and care of the HVAC and electrical systems.
• Supervising and participating in the activities required for the care and maintenance of the grounds, such as cutting grass, planting grass and flower seeds, and trimming shrubbery (using power lawn mowers, hand mowers, and garden tools).
• Operating snow removal equipment (snow blowers, snow plow tractors, salt spreaders, ice picks, and shovels).

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

• One (1) year experience in custodial work and related duties.
• Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
• Ability to accept responsibility and work independently.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Strong work habits and organizational skills.
• Dependability, good judgment, tact, and courtesy.
• Valid Massachusetts driver's license.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and attention to detail.
• Clearance of Criminal Offenders Record Information (CORI) check with the City of Boston.

Shifts to be Filled

• Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
