Job summary

WVTM, the NBC and CBS affiliates in Birmingham, Alabama, seeks a Chief Engineer to lead and develop the station's engineering team, overseeing live operations and modernization. You will manage budgets, capital planning, vendor relations, and guide AI adoption while ensuring regulatory compliance.

This role reports to the General Manager and partners with Hearst Television leadership to advance technology strategy.

Qualifications

At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in television broadcast engineering or a closely related field.
Experience leading or supervising technical staff in a live broadcast environment.
Working knowledge of broadcast systems, RF, automation, IP workflows, and FCC/EAS requirements.
Ability to plan projects, manage budgets and vendors, and coordinate cross-department work.
Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and communicate technical issues clearly.

Responsibilities

Lead, coach, and develop the station’s engineering team, including staffing, AI adoption, and on-call coverage.
Set priorities, maintain service standards, and communicate technical issues and impact across departments.
Oversee reliability, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle planning of broadcast and facilities.
Ensure FCC/EAS compliance, safety practices, and disaster recovery planning.
Develop operating and capital budgets, manage vendor contracts, and drive modernization projects.
Use approved AI tools to support research, logs, and maintenance planning while protecting data.
Review incidents, identify root causes, and apply lessons learned to improve reliability.
