Job summary

Hearst Television’s WVTM in Birmingham, AL is seeking a Chief Engineer to lead a high-energy engineering team in a live broadcast environment. The role requires coordinating with department heads, overseeing live operations, and driving modernization including AI-enabled workflows.

The candidate should have extensive experience in television broadcast engineering, strong budgeting skills, and a track record of collaboration with leadership to align technology with journalistic and production

Qualifications

At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in television broadcast engineering or a closely related technical field.
Experience with broadcast automation, IP video/audio, streaming, cloud or hybrid media systems, cybersecurity, emergency planning.

Responsibilities

Lead, coach, and develop the station’s engineering team, including staffing, scheduling, AI adoption and implementation.
Set priorities and service standards for engineering work, build relationships across departments, and communicate technical issues clearly.
Oversee reliability, maintenance, troubleshooting, and lifecycle planning of broadcast, newsroom, production, automation, master control, media storage, network, streaming, and transmission systems.
Ensure FCC, EAS and other regulatory obligations are met with accurate records, testing, inspections, and timely corrective action.
Develop and manage operating and capital budgets, equipment replacement plans, vendor relationships, service contracts, and engineering projects from proposal through implementation.
