Job summary

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking a Senior Local Bridge Load Ratings Engineer to provide technical expertise in structural inspection, load rating, and posting of bridges under NBIS and state statutes. The role emphasizes coordination with district staff and local agencies to ensure public safety.

Qualified candidates hold IL-licensed PE or Structural Engineer credentials with at least four years of civil engineering experience, and possess strong communication and leadership

Qualifications

• Current IL PE or IL Structural Engineer license with four years civil experience.
• In-depth knowledge of NBIS, bridge inspection, and load rating.
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Ensures accurate detailed plans, photographs, and sketches for structural evaluation of local agency structures.
• Performs structural capacity determination of local agency structures to ensure safety of the traveling public.
• Provides advice concerning bridge-related matters to district personnel and local agencies, consistent with departmental policies and procedures.
• Monitors scheduling of inspections on a priority of need and most efficient use of manpower.
• Provides expertise and instruction to district and local agency personnel concerning bridge inspection techniques and documentation.
• Trains bridge inspection technicians to ensure well-developed and competent staff.
• Reviews load ratings completed by consultants working for local agencies.
• Performs load ratings for permit analysis and overlay requests.
• Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
