Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Boot Software within the BSW Memory Boot & Programming Services team in Milford, Michigan. You will define and evolve Boot SW for new controller families, lead deep-dive debugging, and drive integration work across architectures.

This senior individual contributor role requires extensive experience with bootloaders, secure boot, flash programming, and OTA/update concepts, plus strong collaboration with safety, cybersecurity, and

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or Computer Science.
• 10+ years of embedded software experience in automotive or safety-critical RTOS systems.
• Deep expertise in MCU/SoC startup, bootloader design, secure boot, and memory mapping.
• Experience with debugging tools (JTAG, trace, logic analyzers) and low-level logging.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end boot software design and integration strategy for new controller architectures, from first samples through production launch.
• Execute advanced integration work to bring new controllers to operational status, including initial board bring‑up, flash programming, and startup sequence validation.
• Collaborate with System and Software Architects, Safety, Cybersecurity, Diagnostics, and other teams to define requirements for Boot/BSW.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship on Boot SW best practices and constraints.
• Influence portfolio and roadmap decisions by articulating risks, trade-offs, and investment needs.
