Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory seeks a Beamline Controls Engineer to design, install, and maintain Linux-based control infrastructure for beamlines. The role emphasizes virtualization, storage, networking, and EPICS control systems to ensure reliable experiments.

You will lead technical directions, mentor staff, and collaborate with beamline groups, other divisions, vendors, and DOE labs to implement shared solutions and standards. This is a full-time, on-site position in Berkeley, CA.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in engineering or related field.
• 12+ years of relevant technical experience with Bachelor’s degree, 8+ years with a Master’s degree, or equivalent.
• Extensive experience building and running Linux server, virtualization, storage, and network infrastructure in a scientific or research computing environment.
• Strong hands-on Linux systems engineering, including security hardening and full life cycle management of servers.
• Experience running virtualization and clusters for production work, with shared storage and high availability (Proxmox VE).
• Solid storage and file system work, including disk arrays, networked storage, high-speed I/O, and backup/recovery.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers and virtualization platforms (Proxmox VE) for beamline control and computing.
• Manage configuration, capacity, and security updates across systems.
• Build and maintain storage systems and high-speed data connections to instruments.
• Maintain backup and disaster recovery processes for operational data.
• Manage network and access controls, DNS, VPN, firewalls, and permissions.
• Automate builds and configuration with scripting and CM tools.
• Develop and support EPICS control software for motors, optics, sensors, detectors, and PLC I/O.
• Develop data acquisition software and operator screens for experiments.
• Add new instruments to control software and resolve integration issues.
• Provide technical direction and mentoring; participate in cross-group standards.
• Contribute to project cost estimates, budgets, schedules, and procurement.
• Maintain compliance with LBNL policies and safety standards.
