Job summary

BigCommerce is hiring for a backend-focused role to build and maintain features powering every storefront. You will extend GraphQL Storefront APIs, ensuring backward compatibility while evolving the service to support AI-driven shopping, carts, and checkout.

You’ll investigate production issues, improve performance, and review code across teams. Ideal candidates have 5+ years in production backend work, a Bachelor's degree, and experience with Scala or Kotlin; familiarity with GraphQL, gRPC,

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production.
• Bachelor's degree in CS/EE/SE or equivalent.
• Production experience with Scala or Kotlin preferred; other languages welcome.
• Experience with GraphQL APIs.
• Familiarity with service-to-service communication and caching (gRPC, Redis).
• Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs.
• Familiarity with feature flags and gradual rollouts.
• Experience writing automated tests and with CI/CD.
• Uses AI coding assistants as part of development and reviews AI-generated code.
• Interest in how AI agents use APIs (e.g., tool calls).

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain features in the service that powers every BigCommerce storefront.
• Add and extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields with backward compatibility.
• Help evolve storefront service to support AI driven shopping for carts and checkout.
• Investigate and fix production issues; improve performance and reliability.
• Review code from teammates and other teams; participate in design reviews.
