Job summary

Commerce is hiring a backend engineer to build and maintain the service powering BigCommerce storefronts, collaborating with product managers and partner teams to shape requirements and design solutions.

You will extend GraphQL Storefront API queries, contribute to AI-driven shopping capabilities, and fix production issues with a focus on performance and reliability.

We operate a distributed, hybrid model with strong async collaboration and a commitment to scalable, secure software delivery.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production.
• Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience.
• Production experience with Scala or Kotlin; other languages welcome with willingness to learn Scala.
• Experience collaborating with product managers to translate requirements into design and production.
• Familiarity with GraphQL APIs, HTTP caching, cookies, sessions, and timeouts.
• Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs (Grafana, Prometheus, Sentry).
• Experience releasing changes safely via feature flags and gradual rollouts.
• Experience writing automated tests and working with CI/CD pipelines.
• Comfort using AI coding assistants and reviewing AI-generated code.
• Interest in how AI agents use APIs (e.g., tool calling).

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain the storefront service powering BigCommerce storefronts.
• Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields.
• Evolve storefront service to support AI-driven shopping features.
• Investigate and fix production issues; improve performance and reliability.
• Review code from teammates and other teams; participate in design reviews.
