Job summary

United States Digital Space LLC is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer for the Portfolio Experience team. You will be a seasoned product engineer who emphasizes user needs and full-stack work, with a current backend focus. You’ll collaborate with product, users, and contributors to shape features and architecture.

You will help evolve the backend powering the work items platform, serving millions of work items across groups and projects, with a strong emphasis on performance and observability.

Qualifications

• Able to represent user perspective while balancing product trade-offs.
• Led complex projects with multiple engineers over months and mentored others.
• Strong backend focus with full stack experience including Ruby on Rails.
• Deep PostgreSQL skills: performance optimization, indexing, denormalization.
• Experience designing GraphQL/RESTful APIs at scale with clear contracts.
• Experience improving large automated test suites and CI pipelines.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for async, distributed work.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with product and engineers to shape requirements and break projects into iterations.
• Design and implement backend and real-time features, including GraphQL/REST APIs, with focus on performance and reliability.
• Build and evolve portfolio planning capabilities and work item hierarchies.
• Improve PostgreSQL performance at scale and optimize queries and indexing.
• Create proofs of concept, maintain tests, and enable safe rollouts with feature flags.
• Mentor engineers and contributors through code reviews and reviews.
• Participate in on-call rotations and contribute to root cause analyses.
