GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, implement, and evolve backend capabilities. You will work across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security boundaries to shape a high-scale, global platform.

The role emphasizes architectural trade-offs, excellence in code quality, and AI-enhanced production workflows. You will collaborate with PMs and designers to ensure meaningful, user-centric technical decisions.

Qualifications

• Deep backend expertise with APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in large-scale environments.
• Adaptability across modern backend languages and systems programming, learning fast.
• Architectural judgment for modular boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures.
• Ability to lead through influence, clear written communication, and bridge product needs with technical reality.
• Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production with reliable loops and error handling.

Responsibilities

• Drive Technical Direction: design and ship complex backend features with minimal guidance.
• Raise the Bar: define backend standards for quality, security, availability, and performance.
• Mentor & Lead: mentor engineers, remove blockers, and improve delivery through code/design reviews.
• Operational Excellence: diagnose and prevent performance/reliability issues at scale; participate in incident response.
• AI Integration: apply AI in production engineering to improve outcomes and coach others on responsible use.
