Job summary

Abbott Laboratories in Alameda, CA is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Backend to design, build, and optimize scalable backend systems using Java Spring Boot for biosensor data processing.

You will collaborate with Product, Platform/SRE, and Data/ML teams to deliver cloud-native services, ensure security and compliance (HIPAA/GDPR), mentor junior engineers, and help shape architecture while maintaining high reliability and performance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Minimum 7 years of experience with distributed, cloud-native systems.
• Strong skills in microservices architecture and API design (REST), with GraphQL or gRPC a plus.
• Production Kubernetes experience and familiarity with service mesh concepts.
• Proficiency with messaging/ streaming systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ; Java/Spring Boot in production.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable microservices and APIs for real-time biosensor data processing.
• Lead architecture discussions and mentor junior engineers.
• Ensure observability, performance, and reliability with SRE practices.
• Collaborate with Product, Platform/SRE, and Data/ML teams across deployments.
• Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to incident response.
